Washington Indian Gaming Association - Scholarship Program for 2008
$20,000 Available

Purpose: One of the principal goals in WIGA’s Mission Statement is to promote tribal economic development and self-sufficiency. The WIGA Scholarship Program is designed to promote tribal self-sufficiency by providing scholarships for Native American students in Washington, seeking to advance their own self-sufficiency and broaden their personal and professional potential through higher education. Students pursuing degrees at community and technical colleges, four-year colleges, and post-graduate and professional schools are eligible.

The deadline for scholarship applications is March 15, 2008 - Application

State Workshop to Discuss Tribal Taxation, Economic Development

Area businesses, local governments and the general public are invited to attend one of the five upcoming workshops, called “Uncovering the Mystery of Tribal Sovereignty – Facts and fiction about tribes, state government, and their taxing authority.”

The Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs, in cooperation with the Department of Revenue and the Association of Washington Business, will lead the workshop, which will focus on Tribal Sovereignty and Tribal activity in Washington State. It is intended to help participants understand the law affecting anyone who does business with tribes and tribal members, or does business on a tribal reservation. Workshops are currently scheduled in the following local areas:

  • Tacoma – March 25, 2008 (afternoon session)
  • Vancouver – March 27, 2008 (morning and afternoon sessions)
  • Yakima – April 22, 2008
  • Spokane – April 23, 2008
  • Bellingham – May 22, 2008

Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. and the workshops runs from 9 a.m. to noon, except the afternoon sessions on March 25 & 27. Check-in for the afternoon sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. and the workshop runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
